Rockfield History

Rockfield history is literally studied with stars. Started in 1963 it rapidly became the world's first-ever residential recording studio set-up so that bands could come and stay whilst  recording, and all within  the peaceful surroundings of beautiful Monmouthshire. The converted farmhouse rapidly became an oasis for major bands and as Rockfields reputation and facilities expanded so did its fine reputation - and literally its 'number 1 hits'.

The first big hit recorded in the studios was Dave Edmunds' "I Hear You Knocking" in 1970. Following that success, the studios were used in the early 1970s to record seven albums by Budgie, several by Hawkwind, and one by Hobo. Peter Hammill's second solo album Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night in 1973, Ace's hit single "How Long?" in 1974, and Queen's album Sheer Heart Attack. In August 1975, Queen returned to Rockfield to begin recording the album A Night At The Opera, including "Bohemian Rhapsody". Motörhead made their first recordings at the studios in 1975 and were, briefly, signed to the Rockfield record label.

During a 12-month period in 1996-97, Rockfield sessions resulted in five UK Number One albums, by OasisBlack GrapeThe Charlatans and the Boo Radleys.

The Quadrangle studio was constructed in 1973 and is most famous for the recording of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody".
Artists who have recorded at Rockfield include the Manic Street PreachersRobert PlantColdplay, Paulo Nutini, K T Tunstall, Oasis, Simple Minds, and so many more that it would take too long to list but this link will give you an idea.

Since those heady days Rockfield has continued to provide excellent recording and accommodation facilities to artists who still come from far and wide, but it has also grown as a holiday venue and today is extremely popular as a self-catering location for larger groups.

The Coach House is reserved exclusively for holiday let accommodation while The Quadrangle is available at certain times. Situated just outside Monmouth town in the heart of the Wye Valley and in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural beauty it is surrounded by magnificent countryside.

As a border town, Monmouth is where Wales really begins with the hills around Abergavenny, Hay Bluff and the Brecon Beacons, along with The amazing Forest of Dean and all its activities... literally on your door step.

  • We had a fantastic holiday. The coach house was perfect for our family (loved the sound proofed rooms which meant we didn't get woken by crying babies!), and the kids enjoyed the spa baths! Thanks for the tour of the studio, my husband and brother found it really interesting. The area had so much to see and do, and ofcourse the weather was fantastic. Couldn't have been better :)

Thanks so much for your help organising everything.

  • The Coach House was absolutely perfect for us, everyone there was incredibly friendly and helpful and the building was exactly what we needed. There was plenty of space for us all and we really enjoyed sitting out on the patio in the evening catching some sunshine and enjoying a BBQ. Some of us also had a quick tour of the studios from Kingsley before we left and found it really fascinating!
